Product Description
This classic legal text mphasizes contemporary developments in order to reflect the shift in tort law toward the plaintiff’s side and expanded liability. Expanded coverage is included on subjects such as constitutional privilege in defamation, privacy, product liability, and strict liability. . . . and one you should probably acquire for your law library at some point; its explanations are clear and lucid, and it’s probably the single most-cited work on torts apart from the Restatement (Second).

For a more up-to-date hornbook, consider Dobbs. Second, when your torts professor talks about “black-letter law,” s/he’s not talking about this hornbook or any other; s/he’s usually talking about the Restatement (Second) of Torts (or, in products liability, the Restatement (Third)).

As much as I like hornbooks (and I am emphatically not a fan of the “casebook” approach), I have to say that if you want to get _one_ text to supplement your casebook, you should pick up _A Concise Restatement of Torts_ from the American Law Institute. It’s a great tool and a great read. I still find myself referring to this one from time to time. When I was in law school the lucid and clear explanations of law, combined with copious footnoted citations, made this book a joy to own and read. P&K is a classic as far as hornbooks go, and very useful as a study aid for a 1L torts class in my opinion. I also highly recommend “A Concise Restatement of Torts” by the A.L.I. to help out with all the restatements

This book was actually recommended by my Contracts instructor. Contracts Examples and Explanations is the best Contracts supplement that I have found. This book saved my Contracts grade – any law student in a Contracts class will find this book immensely useful. Contract, Examples & Explanations is an in-depth coverage of Contracts. It’s approachable and well written, providing an excellent foundation in Contract law. I read this book in parallel with Contracts in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)) and found the two books complemented each other quite well in helping me to understand contracts.

An obscure part of the law allows states to restrict abortion coverage by private plans operating in new insurance markets. Abortion rights supporters are dismayed.
“Health care reform is not an excuse to take rights away from women.”

Since Obama signed the legislation law March 23, Arizona and Tennessee have enacted laws restricting abortion coverage by health plans in new insurance markets, called exchanges. Most of the states allow exceptions in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Insurers still could offer separate policies to specifically cover abortion.

Overall, there are 29 states where lawmakers or public policy groups expressed serious interest, Harned said.

Before the overhaul became law, five states had limits on private insurance coverage of abortion — Idaho, Kentucky, Missouri, North Dakota and Oklahoma. Abortion rights supporters are concerned that the list is growing as a result of the new federal law.

Murray had joined in voting down a federal abortion coverage ban when the Senate debated health care last year. Now she and other abortion rights supporters worry the same sorts of restrictions could spread from state to state.

Most private health insurance plans cover abortion as a legal medical procedure, but research indicates many women opt to pay directly.

The federal law allows private insurance plans in the exchanges to cover abortion as long as they collect a separate premium. That compromise split abortion foes in Congress and around the country. All eyes are now on Florida, where Gov. Charlie Crist will decide soon whether to sign a bill that restricts abortion coverage in that state’s insurance exchange. “If Florida passes it, it really open up more moderate states to passing these bans.”

The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill. Now, Grossman has updated this classic work to include information on 21st-century military conflicts, recent trends in crime, suicide bombings, school shootings, and more. ON KILLING is the study of what author Lt. Col. Dave Grossman has termed “killology”. This odd term describes, not killing between nations, but the exact circumstances involved when one individual ends the life of another individual, with the primary focus being on combat situations. Grossman’s argument is carefully researched and methodically laid out. He begins by filling in some historical details, discussing the statistics for shots fired per soldier killed for the World Wars and the American Civil War. The soldier found up-close killing to be abhorrent, so the emphasis was countered by inserting machinery (preferably one manned by multiple soldiers) between the killer and the enemy to increase the physical and emotional distance. Every effort is made to dehumanize the act of killing.

Grossman spends a great deal of time discussing the trauma that the solder who kills faces when he returns to civilian life. Those soldiers had been psychologically trained to kill in a way that no previous army had gone through, and there was no counteragent working to heal their psychological wounds. Grossman takes great pains to discuss how horrifying the act of killing is, and points out how detrimental it is to one’s mental health. It isn’t just a Pavlovian force at work here; Grossman points out many reasons (both stemming from society and the changing family structure) for why young people of today seem much more able to kill than their parents and grandparents were.

Grossman is very logical in his approach and his argument is a powerful one. I highly recommend this book, especially for people like myself who have never experienced war at close quarters.

That sense of security doesn’t come on its own,” he said in brief remarks on the west front lawn of the Capitol during Peace Officers Memorial Day, which honors officers killed in the line of duty.

The event is part of National Police Week, an annual tribute to law enforcement service and sacrifice.

The president said he was proud of law enforcement officials who chose their careers out of a sense of calling to serve their neighbors, neighborhoods and “to live a life in service of others.”

“It’s a calling that carries immense risk,” he added, citing the uncertainty of what that next duty call might bring.

“Every day in America, families go about their lives” — work at the office, dropping kids at school, said Obama, who was joined at the event by Attorney General Eric Holder.

“We often take it for granted, this cycle of life.” Figures from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund show that officer deaths declined from 138 in 2008 to 116 in 2009. Some of those honored at the memorial service included the four officers killed near Seattle by an ex-convict; four who were shot to death in Oakland, Calif.; and three other police officers shot to death in Pittsburgh.

Today it is the most widely cited law book in the world. Edited by Bryan A. Garner, the world s leading legal lexicographer, the 9th Edition is the most authoritative, comprehensive law dictionary ever published. It contains more than 45,000 terms and includes: 2,000 more terms than the 8th Edition and 19,000 more than the 7th Edition including click fraud, Code Adam, collaborative law, ecoterrorism, environmental tort, friendly subpoena, happy-slapping, honor crime, secret detention, Schumer box, and super precedent. Definitions of more than 1,000 law-related abbreviations and acronyms. I have struggled for almost a month now with my Mirriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law and other online dictionaries because these dictionaries do not give clear definitions. Black’s, however, excels in clarity. Some reviewers contend that the 7th edition is missing valuable information included in earlier editions. If you need to do research on jurisdictional definitions of terms, consult Words and Phrases (multi-volume dictionary, every law library has it).

The full version includes much commentary from legal treatises that expands understanding of the terms beyond the given definitions.

Go buy this dictionary. How can anyone even tangentially involved in the legal arena dispute the preeminence of Black’s Law Dictionary? If you need a pocket law dictionary for class (which you do), go buy one. It’s standard fare at all major law firms. Magnificent, comprehensive dictionary, covering definitions thoroughly.

Product Description
Jarvious Cotton’s great-great-grandfather could not vote as a slave.
–FROM THE NEW JIM CROW

Alexander shows that, by targeting black men and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control, even as it formally adheres to the principle of color blindness. The New Jim Crow challenges the civil rights community–and all of us–to place mass incarceration at the forefront of a new movement for racial justice in America.

Today, the number of inmates in the United States exceeds 2,000,000. In this book, Alexander argues that this system of mass incarceration “operates as a tightly networked system of laws, policies, customs, and institutions that operate collectively to ensure the subordinate status of a group defined largely by race.” The War on Drugs, the book contends, has created “a lower caste of individuals who are permanently barred by law and custom from mainstream society.” Mass incarceration, and the disabilities that come with the label “felon,” serve, metaphorically, as the new Jim Crow.

The book develops this argument with systematic care. The first chapter provides context with a brief history of the rise, fall and interrelation of the first two racial caste systems in the United States, slavery and Jim Crow. Law Professor Michelle Alexander’s long-anticipated debut puts a bright light directly on what is perhaps our greatest national shame: the extraordinary rates of incarceration for people of color in the United States.

Impeccably well-argued, “The New Jim Crow” is an inspired work – representing the debut of a bright, new and important voice in American life and letters.

Discover the 28 fundamental beliefs of the Founding Fathers which they said must be understood and perpetuated by every people who desired peace, prosperity, and freedom. Principle 1 – The only reliable basis for sound government and just human relations is Natural Law. Natural law is God’s law. There are certain laws which govern the entire universe, and just as Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence, there are laws which govern in the affairs of men which are “the laws of nature and of nature’s God.” Principle 2 – A free people cannot survive under a republican constitution unless they remain virtuous and morally strong. “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. - Benjamin Franklin Principle 3 – The most promising method of securing a virtuous people is to elect virtuous leaders. “Neither the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt. – Samuel Adams Principle 4 – Without religion the government of a free people cannot be maintained. – George Washington. Plus 24 more principles like the above…

I am a retired educator who majored in history and taught American History for several years. Our students are being fed lies, yes lies, about our history. This is a book that would be required reading in my American History classroom. Again, this book needs to be read by every American citizen, liberal or conservative, elephant or donkey. I hesitated to write this review as I stopped reviewing books on government and politics a couple years ago because of the nasty comments people would make about my conservative and Christian views. I will be buying extra copies to give to friends who are still teaching. I also will not read any comments on my review of this book.

The book was in perfect condition, couldn’t have looked better if it was shrink wrapped. I got my book in a short amount of time and it was in excellent condition. As an MBA student, this text was a great introduction to business law. I bought this book for my Business Law class. With tons of terms and actual court cases covered in the book, trying to finish the assigned chapter before class becomes a really challenging and, sometimes, frustrating task. You can really understand the logic behind the law and how the business law has developed to promote fair, justice, and ethic in the US through the reading.
